Ceramic Coating vs Sealant vs Wax in the Pacific Northwest
If your car or RV lives outside here, it spends most of the year wet. Rain, road film, tree sap, moss and salt air all go after the finish. Every kind of protection helps. The difference is how long it lasts and how much it costs. Here is the honest version.
The short answer
Wax looks great and lasts weeks. Fine if you enjoy waxing.
Sealant lasts months. The best value for most daily drivers.
Ceramic coating lasts years with maintenance. Worth it if the vehicle parks outside, you plan to keep it, or you would rather wash less.
Side by side
Why the Northwest changes the math
It is wet most of the year. Protection that sheds water keeps grime from sitting on the paint. A coating does this best and longest.
Things fall on parked vehicles. Sap, needles, pollen and bird droppings are acidic and sticky. A hard coating gives them something to sit on besides your clear coat or gelcoat.
Salt air near the water. On Camano, Whidbey and around Anacortes, marine air speeds up oxidation, especially on RV fiberglass and gelcoat.
Washing outside in winter is miserable. The less often you need to, the better. A coated vehicle rinses clean faster.
When ceramic is worth it
It parks outside or under trees
You plan to keep it at least a few years
It is an RV that sits in storage between trips
You would rather pay once than reseal every few months
When a sealant is the smarter buy
The car is leased or you sell it soon
The paint needs more than a one-step polish (a coating would lock in the flaws)
You are happy to have it detailed every few months anyway
The part most people skip: polish first
A coating seals in whatever is under it. Swirls and oxidation stay locked in if the finish is not polished first. That is why every Posh coating includes a full decontamination and one-step machine polish. More on paint polishing · RV polishing
